Last night was the most INTENSE Monopoly game of my ENTIRE LIFE. FIVE HOURS. SHOUTING, SUICIDE, STRIPPERS AND TROPHY BOYS WIVES. It was awesome. A++, would play again.

Unfortunately, I was sitting half on a matress on the floor, so my lower back and tailbone are KILLING ME NOW, plus I had ballroom dance this morning, with rumba and HIP ACTION OW. But now I'm back in my room, and it's time for...more picspam! (Very Gerard-heavy)

Toro pauses for a moment, trying to think of a way to phrase it properly. "The kind of deal where if you tell us where your other boys are, we'll let you go."

Pete frowns, and he continues, "They knew both of the dead kids and we have to talk to them. Nothing malicious, just talking."

"What, so first you think I'm fucking these kids, and now you want me to tell you where they are? They don't like cops." He smirks a little bit and gives Bryar a significant glance. He figures that there's no point in mentioning that they've successfully dodged him for nearly a month.

Bryar wants very, very badly to punch Wentz square on his bratty nose, but knows better.

"Let's put it this way," Toro says, trying not to sound as annoyed as Bryar looks. "We're giving you the benefit of the doubt for now. So if you could help us out a little..."

"They move around a lot." He hopes it doesn't sound too defensive, and it's the closest he's willing to get to admitting that he doesn't have a clue where his boys are.

"Where might they be?" Toro tries again--he doesn't trust Bryar not to snap on Wentz, they obviously have some history.

There's a very long pause, and Wentz looks a little uncomfortable, shifting in his chair.

"Wait. You don't know?" Toro says, suddenly, the silence too long and awkward to mean anything else. As much as he wishes it isn't true, it's pretty clear Wentz doesn't.

Finally, Wentz sighs and mumbles, "After Ryan was--the others didn't come back." His eyes are fixed on the table, anywhere but their eyes.

Another long silence while Toro and Bryar exchange glances and let that sink in. Pete looks up, eyes bright. "Ryan was--" he almost says mine, but thankfully he stops himself. It would be difficult to explain at the best of times, and impossible with present company.

"He was their leader, and they don't trust me anymore." Half-forgetting where he is, Pete sighs, looking down at the worn knees of his jeans. "I couldn't keep him safe."

"Safe from what?" Toro asks finally, because there's the off-chance that there are options that aren't Way when it comes to the kid's death, and if it wasn't Way, that would make their life a whole lot simpler. Someone else could take the case, for one.

Pete starts to say something and then stops abruptly, and they both know, absolutely, that he knows something they don't about the whole mess.

"Wentz, we know you know something." Bryar forces himself to speak evenly, because he's a professional and he refuses to let his personal feelings affect a case. "If you're not going to talk to save your own skin, at least think of these boys."

God, he can't believe he used the "think of the children" argument on a sicko like him, but it seems to be working. Wentz fidgets a little more, rubbing at the tattoos on his arm and ducks his head, as if trying to keep them from seeing his thoughts in his eyes.

There's a long pause, and Wentz seems to be having an argument with himself before he finally sighs and says, "Brent."

"What?" Toro asks, blinking, because he's missing something and he knows it.

"Brent," Wentz repeats. "You asked what--who they needed to be safe from."

"Brent Wilson?" Bryar asks, just to be sure. Wentz nods.

"What made him a threat?" Toro's trying to remain calm, but it feels like there's a lead here. Of course, it also feels like this last thread to Way doesn't lead to him after all.

"He was an angry kid." Wentz shrugs tightly, and it finally clicks with Toro that this guy really cared about the boys. Whether it was inappropriate, like Bryar seems to believe, or not, he cared.

Toro's expression softens a little. "Was he--dangerous, then?" It'll be both a relief and a disappointment if it turns out that these two cases aren't related to the Way case; it'll be a relief because it'll mean that Way stopped or at least was on a break from killing and it'll be a disappointment because it'll mean no new leads.

Wentz looks at him a little sadly. "Yeah. Yeah, I would say, considering Ryan is dead--" and he stops, swallowing hard.

Bryar considers moving forward and asking his own questions, but Toro seems to be forming an emotional connection with Wentz and so far, Bryar's attempts have only been met with sarcasm. So he hangs back and waits for Toro's next question.

"So, if Brent killed Ryan, who killed Brent?" And he catches the flicker of emotion on Pete's face--this is the root of it all. This is either making or breaking the case.

"I don't know." It's a lie, and he knows it.

Toro leans forward, and he's so close to the answer he can practically taste it. "I know that was a lie," he says, low and soft. "You know who did it. Who was it?" And he's trying not to let any excitement show, but Wentz might give them exactly what they're looking for after all.

"I--" And Pete knows he can't say anything, he can't sell Gerard and Frank out. They took care of Brent (he would be lying if he said he wasn't at all happy that the guy who killed Ryan got repaid in kind) and are, really, cool guys. And Mikey would never forgive him. "I honestly don't know. Probably some kid who figured out what happened to Ryan." Almost, sort-of, partially the truth. He hopes it's enough.

Toro glances back to Bryar, a skeptical look. He knows it's not the truth--well, he amends, it's probably partially the truth. But it's not enough.

"A name?" he asks, turning back to Pete.

"I told you, I don't know," Pete repeats, and he's met with two disbelieving stares. He swallows hard.

"Why don't you want to tell us?" Toro goes for a different approach--there are only a few real reasons he can think of that Wentz wouldn't be willing to give them a name. He may just stalwartly not want to help them, but if that was the case, he wouldn't have given out Brent's name. So either he killed the kid himself, like Bryar suggested, or he's protecting whoever did. Given Wentz's connections to Michael, Toro can feel Way all over this. They just have to get Wentz to give them something.

"I don't, I just don't know." He's been reduced to repeating the same tired argument, and Toro could almost grin. They're getting close.

"Why don't you want to give us the name?" Toro hesitates before offering, "Was it because you did it?" He's likely to get either no answer or an explosive denial--and if it's the second, it has to be Way that did it.

Pete looks up, shocked. "What? Fuck, no. No, of course I didn't." He can't say for sure that he wouldn't have, had Frank given him a name and a place but--no, no, he wouldn't. Ryan was always his, and he misses him like hell, but he doesn't think he has it in him to kill.

Toro feels a little like cheering, but forges on. "Who are you trying to protect?" It's obvious at this point, to him, at least, but knowing it and hearing it out of Wentz's mouth are two very different things.

"No one." They know, Pete can tell, they know and they're not going to stop until he tells them what they want to hear. But he'll never be able to, because even if he tells them, they'll never believe that Gerard hasn't done anything wrong (besides be too accepting of Frank's "alternative lifestyle" choice). And whatever Frank has done, he saved Alex, Ryland and Nate, and he made sure that Pete's boys are safe from Brent the only surefire way. He has to tell them something, anything to get them off the trail, but he's never been good at lying.

Toro knows, and with a quick glance at Bryar, he confirms it--they both know who Wentz is hiding, and they both know that he's probably not going to say anything. The only problem is the next move.

Pete, meanwhile, sits in silence, trying to think of something he can say that will satisfy them but not give up Gerard and Frank. The only problem is, he can't think of anything.

After a long pause, Toro finally has to say something. "If you can't tell us who it is, can you tell us if we know who they are?"

Pete doesn't have any illusions as to what Frank would do to him if he rats them out, especially if Gerard ends up getting hurt. But it doesn't seem like there's much choice--he doesn't have any more outs, and if he refuses to talk, he has no doubt that the upstanding Officer Bryar is going to book him with a smile on his face (and to think he was actually kinda sorry when Brendon torched him).

"I just--" he isn't used to this, wasn't cut out for it. Patrick would do better, he can go deadly cool in stressful situations where Pete just freaks out. "--I don't want anyone else to get hurt." Including me.

Toro looks at Bryar for a moment and nods. "We can make sure you're kept safe, you know. We could... arrange something." He knows that Wentz probably is anticipating being murdered himself if he rats someone--Way--out, but he knows people who do protection gigs and they're good at what they do.

They can both see that Wentz's resolve is weakening. Bryar isn't surprised--he's dealt with enough lowlifes to know that they'll never protect each other for long. He watches intently while Wentz studies his hands.

"I didn't get a name," Wentz says, slow and still studying his fingernails. "It didn't sound like he was a newbie, though."

And that is practically a name in and of itself. Toro nods and turns to Bryar. "I think," he says, slowly, looking back at Wentz, who is still studying his fingernails as if they have all of life's mysteries under them, "that we've gotten what we need to know. Right?"

He's itching to get into the details surrounding Brent's murder, now that he knows for sure that it's Way again. He doesn't enjoy the nasty aspects of his job, but when he finds something to work with he'll run with it until he drops.
