Good god.
So yeah...digging the fandom witchhunts, eh? I really really hate people who think they can protect kids from the world, and don't mean "kids" but "everyone who is not us." I mean, I think speaking out against child abuse is amazing and so important, but I don't see why, instead of targetting porn sites or chatboards, they're going after fandom. People who write stories. Hey witchhunters, I'm a teenaged girl and I have read a story that contained nonconsensual underage incest (how's that for a triple threat?) and I LIKED it. To a certain extent, I feel people's motivations have to be considered. I mean, I know there's some sick stuff on LJ, and some it probably does deserve to be exorcised. But fandom? If I wasn't involved with it, maybe I'd be more unbiased, but from where I sit, fandom is pretty much nice people, who, very importantly, can see a difference between reality and fiction. I think Sam and Dean should have hot sex not because I think incest is the way to go in the real world but...um, have you seen Sam and Dean? Yum because it's interesting. It's just a story. And looking at my icon, I just got this terrible sinking feeling. Fandom is crazy. That's why I love it. If someday, these "concerned" people have their way, and there is no fandom...I don't know what I'd do. Fandom is like my family who I've never seen and actually like (kidding! I actually get along quite well with my family)
In other news: ScriptFrenzy starts tomorrow! My plan as of now is to write for an hour everyday. Hopefully it will work (and the summertime won't eat my soul.)

Some people are going after the chattboards and porn sites. One in particular perverted justice going after sexual offenders. But it's useless to think that's going to help completely if people are still supporting these ideas in stories and things like that.
I don't see how you could totally lose your fandom if the ideas such as child abuse and child incest aren't allowed in them. I admit there is one instance of child abuse in my one ff story but I wasn't really for it. It was my beta person who told me I should probably have him go further.
Parents do and should be protecting their children from the "terrible" stuff in the world. I'm amazed at some of the things my preschoolers at work know about. It says something about society when a four year tells you her favorite movies are some of the ones where people get shot. Four year olds shouldn't be watching horror movies or movies with violence where somebody gets shot. Let them be a kid for awhile before they actually have to grow up and realize how screwed up the world is.
I have to say I'm kinda weirded out by the fact that you can say you liked reading something about an underage person getting raped by somebody related to them. I don't really care what a person's motivations are for raping a child. I'm not sure there's any way that could be considered an okay thing to do because of the person's motivations.
You do realize that this happens to real children all the time. I'm sure you wouldn't be enjoying reading about it if it happened to you or somebody you knew. Even if the character's were fictional. It's one thing to say yeah I read it but to say you enjoyed reading it?
Bastard Out of Carolina is probably the most graphic portrayal of child abuse and child rape/incest. I would never think to say yeah I enjoyed reading about the little girl in the book getting raped. In my opinion that's much different than acknowledging the fact that it was a very well written book. The book was pretty much the most upsetting thing I ever read.
I know Dakota Fanning's new movie is so controversial because of the idea of child rape. There's enough of that happening everyday do we really need a movie promoting the idea more. Thanks to the internet now pediophiles everywhere can now go and download the movie when it's released and get turned on by like a 13 year old in a stimulated rape scene. When that isn't enough they can go track down a child to fulfill their new wants.

The violation of trust is the worst in situtations where the victim knew or was related to their attacker. They don't want to believe that this person (whoever they are -- Uncle Bob or dad or brother Joe or neighbor Ted) could hurt them. Admitting that it happened and then telling family members is the worst. Rape and incest tears families apart and destorys the victims.
I know that you're talking about fictional victims, but at the same time, you need to understand the victim's POV. These kinds of things are damaging and harmful for the victim and have long-term effects. They will have nightmares, flashbacks, an inablity to trust and also unable to move on. They are always questioning others' motives and uneasy and at the same time wondering how it happened to them and how they didn't know.
Stories containing these elements that you claim to enjoy are often painful for those who have experience exact or similar situations. And you'd be surprised who has experienced abuse or similar situations. Used in the right way, abuse can be shown as the evil that it is. Abuse is one of the more undereported and misunderstood common senarios of the day.
Yes, young kids understand the concept of rape. My 11 y/o cousin understood it several years ago. But no one seems to understand abuse. It needs to be out there so that others can be educated about it, but it needs to not be seen in a positive light. It needs to be seen for it's destructive and harmful nature.
I know you're all probably wondering how I know and why I care and here's the scoop on that -- I've been there. I've been -- and still am -- a victim of rape & incest. A person I looked up to as a brother, who married my sister, sexually abused me for eight years (ages 8-16) until I finally discovered what was going on. And you know what? You don't get over it. It destroys personal realtionships with others, trust in others, and essentially your entire life. I can't think of one night that I've felt safe, one night that I slept without a nightlight, one night that I haven't had a nightmare. I also can't think of one person I truly trust.
So why am I telling you all? Because it's important that you are all aware of the implications of abuse, rape, and incest. It's real and chances are, several people you know have experienced at least one of the above or knows someone who has. It's damanging and it needs to be stopped. Even if it's only fictionally -- it needs to be shown as what it is -- cruel and devasting to the victim.
That's all I have to say.

In the story I mentioned, I meant that I enjoyed the work *as a whole*. I was trying to point out (as you mentioned) that works that include objectionable material are not necessarily disgusting and evil because of that. I could have stated it better.
